Anxiety Management

COVID-19 Preparedness and Mitigation Protocol

I am offering some office-based, and mostly video-based, psychotherapy and couples counseling via an easy-to-use, HIPAA-compliant teletherapy platform called Doxy.me. Here in my building, the engineer/superintendent and management company have upgraded the air filtration system (vastly improving its MERV-rated filters, and so on). For in-person meetings, I try to maintain ample space between chairs, and time between sessions for everyone's protection. Also, there are days when I might be wearing a basic, disposable paper mask in our sessions, particularly if you request that I do so. (I would wear a sturdier N-95 mask at your request.--Your health is very important to me.) I will not require you to wear masks, however, and I am open to any additional suggestions you might have, going forward.

Anxiety Management Therapy in Washington, DC

Anxiety describes feelings of nervousness, self-doubt, and apprehension that may, or may not, be caused by real-life stressors. (In some cases, anxiety certainly can become its own stressor.) Anxiety is a common feeling that most people experience at some point in their lives, but when feelings of worry and panic are recurring, overwhelming, and uncontrollable, anxiety may leave a person severely incapacitated.

How does anxiety therapy work?

There are many symptoms of anxiety; some are obvious, while others are more suppressed. The ultimate goal of anxiety management is to allow the patient to feel more relaxed in situations where they would usually feel overwhelmed or panicked by getting to the underlying thoughts and emotions.

Anxiety management therapy helps patients struggling with anxiety to identify their stressors and establish coping mechanisms for mitigating the symptoms, at least as the first order of business. The next and equally important task has us getting to the underlying root causes of the anxiety, so that the treatment can allow for long-lasting (in some cases permanent) changes in one’s relationships to self and others. This fundamental change paves the way to a more emotionally flexible life.

Through weekly therapy sessions (or as often as necessary in the very beginning), patients suffering with anxiety can learn to live their everyday lives in a more relaxed state of mind. This effective approach offers gives you an honest and accurate view of yourself, as well as a means to develop new ways of engaging with yourself and others.

Anxiety Therapy in DC

Residents of Washington DC and the surrounding areas are subject to many stressors that can cause anxiety. It can be difficult to relax when there is bumper-to-bumper traffic at all hours of the day, and the hustle and bustle of the city can be overwhelming. Part of anxiety management therapy is learning how to cope with and manage these every-day stressors.

Relationship Anxiety

If it seems like a real struggle to tame angry responses in your relationship(s), then it may be appropriate to use the services of a psychotherapist or professional counselor. The main goal of anger moderation counseling is to help the patient/client recognize in a new way what makes him or her angry---emotional antecedents, for example--and to adopt better, more constructive responses as quickly as possible. As an experienced psychotherapist, I work with people to excavate the truer (or additional) sources of the present-day anger, manage these triggers effectively through awareness and insight, shore up these gains through tailored relaxation techniques and clarifying what's really important, and then, when necessary, learn how to adopt and integrate healthy forms of self-assertion, rather than aggression. To learn if I might be a good fit as your anger moderation therapist, let's have a brief phone conversation.
